IMMIGRATION & RELIGION IDEAS FOR VOIR DIRE
The subject of illegal and undocumented immigrants has become a red flag politically in politics as well as culturally.
Sitting next to me is Paramjit Singh and his wife, Harmeet. They have brought this lawsuit. Please would you take a good look at both of these good people? He is wearing a religious turban, and his wife is dressed in the traditional wear of someone who is a member of the Sikh religion.
(1) Do any of you know anyone who wears a religious turban?
(2) Tell me about it, please
- Harmeet, his wife, is wearing the traditional clothing of a member of the Sikh religion. You’ll notice she has a red mark on her forehead known as a “Bindi” as part of their religious beliefs.
(1) Do any of you know anyone who have a religious sign on their forehead like hers?
(2) Do you know anyone who dresses like Parma does?
(3) Tell me about it please
- We can agree that neither looks nor dresses like the rest of us here? Can we talk honestly about how that makes us feel in deciding the right verdict in this case?
- Is anyone here a member of the Sikh religion?
(1) Close to someone who is?
(2) Connection or contact with the religion?
- Is anyone here familiar with the teachings and beliefs of the Sikh religion?
- They were both born in India and come from a different culture than the rest of us.
(1) Anyone here born in India?
(2) Anyone close to someone born in India?
- Can we agree that this nice couple is different from the rest of us in a lot of ways?
- Can we agree that the differences I’ve pointed out represent a lot of strikes against them in a trial where they are suing an American pharmaceutical company?
- Now, I have an admission to make to you. When they asked us to represent them in this case my first reaction was that they would have a lot of trouble getting jurors to find in their favor because of all the differences they have from most people on a jury. I’m not proud of my immediate reaction, but it’s true. Once I got to know how very special they both are and what good people they are I realized how wrong I had been.
(1) I’m wondering if any of you have the same first impression I had, even if a little bit?
(2) Can we talk about this honestly among ourselves?
- Parma speaks with a heavy accent, and it can be difficult to understand what he is saying.
(1) Are any of you close to someone from another country whose English is hard to understand?
- There is something else I need to tell you. Parma and his wife both studied hard to become citizens and passed the test. For the last 20 years, they have been proud American citizens.
(1) Is there anyone here who is also a naturalized citizen?
(2) Are you close to someone who is a naturalized citizen?
(3) Talk to me about your ideas on immigrants becoming citizens
